How to Stay on Track at the Fair!

Fair food. Where everything is deep fried and served on a stick. And usually just tastes so, so good.

The state fair is a BIG DEAL here in Minnesota. It's the second biggest in the nation, behind Texas, which runs for a month. We boast the largest average per day attendance at over 150,000 people per day, with 1.7 million attendees last year! Many travel from thousands of miles away just to come to "The Great Minnesota Get-Together." It's definitely a highlight of my year!

Here are some ways to still enjoy the fair, but not sabotage your diet while doing so.

  • Get in a solid workout before going. After workouts, I'm generally hungry, but definitely not in search of greasy food. I am hoping this will combat my appetite, at least a little bit. :)
  • Keep walking! The MN State Fair spans 320 acres. Stay active throughout the day. Don't be those people on the hunt for the next closest bench. Wear comfortable shoes!
  • Look up the foods you'd really like to try beforehand and make a list. Try to stick to that, rather than just grazing throughout the day and eating much more than you intended.
  • Find times of different attractions or shows you'd like to see throughout the day. Don't let food be the main attraction all day long!
  • Share your food with friends and family! Focus on just sampling different foods rather than eating the whole serving.
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day!
  • Pace yourself and do your best not to eat everything in sight. Set a time limit, like "I will only try something once every two hours."
  • Spend extended periods of time in the pig barn. If that doesn't make you lose your appetite, I don't know what will.
Haha, okay, joking on that last one.

Hopefully these tips will help me and you stay on track this year at the fair!
